What to Wear to a Muni: A Field Guide

A field guide to muni golf style: what actually works on a public course, from a good graphic tee to a broken-in dad hat. No dress code, no stuffy logos.

Walk into a private club and the dress code does the talking. Walk onto a muni and the only rules are to play ready golf and keep up. That freedom is the whole appeal of public-course golf, but it leaves one honest question: what do you actually wear to a muni?

Here is our field guide to muni golf style, built for range regulars, weekend foursomes, and anyone who plays more and cares less.

There is no dress code, and that is the point

Most municipal courses ask for very little: a shirt, shoes that will not chew up the greens, and a pace that keeps the group behind you happy. No collar police, no logo requirements. You get to dress like the round was worth playing anyway.

The muni uniform, piece by piece

A graphic tee that works off the course

A soft, well-fitting golf tee is the backbone of the muni look. It breathes on a warm round, it survives the cart, and it still looks right at the taproom after. Our Front Nine front-print tees keep it clean, while the Back Nine back prints bring the bigger statement. And yes, you can absolutely skip the polo.

A broken-in hat

A distressed dad hat does more work than any other accessory: sun cover, bad-hair insurance, and instant muni credibility. Grab one from The Pro Shop and let it age.

Shorts or joggers you can actually move in

Stretch shorts in summer, joggers when it cools off. Nobody at the muni is measuring your inseam.

What to skip

  • Anything you would be upset to get a grass stain on.
  • Brand-new white shoes you are afraid to use.
  • A shirt so loud it becomes the whole personality. A little restraint reads better.

Dress like the round was worth playing anyway

Muni-approved gear looks good with beat-up shoes, a questionable tee time, and a group chat that became a foursome too late to cancel. If you want the full vocabulary, the golf glossary breaks down the slang, and the full drop has the rest of the rotation. Bad shots, good times.
